Most coverage tells you everything is great. We don't. Each entry below names a specific failure mode buyers regret within the first six months — temperature creep, pump noise, basket lock-in, retention disasters. Treat this as the negative companion to the budget guides.

Breville Barista Express

An entry tier that hides the espresso lessons

The pressurized basket and built-in grinder make the Barista Express forgiving — that's the pitch. The cost is that you don't actually learn dose, distribution, or grind. Most owners we've heard from outgrow it inside six months and end up buying a real grinder + a separate machine, doubling their spend. If you want to learn espresso, get a Gaggia Classic Pro and a real grinder for the same money. If you want push-button drinks, get a real super-automatic.
